The heated dispute between two game development giants, Moonton and Riot Games, has finally reached a satisfactory peaceful point.
Riot Games has decided to discontinue their lengthy lawsuit against Moonton Games over a dispute involving intellectual property rights in the game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.
After several stages of communication, the two parties have reached a global agreement. Moonton and Riot Games have signed an agreement to resolve the related issues.
A Dispute that Lasted for Almost 6 Years
The dispute between Moonton and Riot Games has been ongoing since 2017. This disagreement arose when Riot filed a lawsuit against Moonton in 2017, alleging that Mobile Legends copied elements of the League of Legends inner game.
The court’s decision dismissed the case and held that the jurisdiction of the Chinese courts applied in the case. This happened for two main reasons.
First, because Riot’s China-based parent company Tencent, which is also working on the development of League of Legends, refused to participate in the case. Secondly, since Tencent and Riot were already involved in similar legal disputes in China, the US court felt it was “unfair” to let the two companies wage a “two-front war” against the MLBB developer.
In 2022, Riot Games sued Moonton Games for copyright infringement. The lawsuit was based on the striking similarity between some elements in the game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) with League of Legends and Wild Rift (LOL Mobile).
Several cases have been repeatedly overturned by US courts, stating that these issues are best dealt with in other jurisdictions.
In 2024, both Riot Games and Moonton reached a global agreement to reconcile. In this effort, Riot Games officially dropped all lawsuits filed against Moonton. As a result, the relationship between Moonton and Riot Games was no longer confrontational.
